Teaching Engineering: Psychological Type and Learning

  1. Describes which types prefer which fields of engineering.  (For example, INTJs prefer aerospace engineering and ESTPs prefer petroleum engineering.)
  2. Describes how different types learn, with teacher-oriented discussion of curricula, student retention, interpersonal relationships, etc.

The Effect of a Nuclear Family's Sudden Loss on the Personality Structures of Individual Family Members

A 195 page dissertation on the personality effects of grief on a family after the youngest child died in a car accident.  The types of the family members included an initial ISTJ father, ENTJ mother, INFJ sibling, ENTJ sibling, and ESTP sibling.  After the loss, the family members were now an ISTJ father, an ISFJ mother, an INFJ sibling, an ESTJ sibling, and an ESTP sibling.  Grief responses for each of the family members were recorded and analyzed. 

The Giving Type: A Study on How Different Personality Types and Temperaments Respond to Tailored Donation Appeals

119 pages long, this paper explores the giving habits of different types and temperaments and finds that ENFJs are most likely to give.  In addition, the language of a donation appeal can successfully be structured to fit a person's type.  Also analyzes which charities the various types/temperaments are most likely to respond to with donations (for example, the Artisans tend to donate to disaster relief). 

The Integration of the MBTI in a Marriage Counseling Approach

A 285 page doctoral thesis by a Theology student.  Meant for therapists, this work describes the needs and problems of various pairings, type and marital issues, various therapies, the validity of the MBTI, and type and PET scans (and much, much more). 
The case studies in Chapter 6 cover an ENFJ/ISTJ pairing, an INTJ/INFP pairing, an ISTJ/ISFP pairing, an ENTJ/INTJ pairing, and an ESTJ/INTP pairing. (Other pairings are mentioned elsewhere in the work.)

The Relationship between the MBTI Step I Instrument and the 16PF in an Outplacement Sample

Researchers studying a group of managers receiving outplacement interviewing and counseling found that the managers were strongly ENTJ, ENTP, INTJ, and INTP--in short, all the Rational types.  SF types, on the other hand, were underrepresented.  Discusses why this might be and explains some of the 16PF (another personality test) traits characteristic of various types. 

To Catch a Liar: A Signal Detection Analysis of Personality and Lie Detection

A study of which types are best at detecting lies.  The author concludes that the more like an ENTP you are, the better at lie detecting you are.  There is an explanations of how Extraversion, Intuition, Thinking, and Perceiving produce this result.  The study also gives interesting information on other groups that are successful at detecting lies (teachers, secret service agents, criminals, high Machs, etc.).

This quick, easy-to-read article describes how to make the learning experience interesting and engaging for each temperament using four bullet-pointed lists.  The topic is discussed within the framework of a training session for type trainers using the Linda Berens method.  The article also contains a brief description of the four interaction styles she postulated for the types: In Charge, Chart the Course, Get Things Going, and Behind the Scenes.  A good reference paper to carry around if you want to keep fresh on how to teach people of each temperament.
